Terms of Service
These terms are an agreement between you and Fin Taylor, a sole proprietor doing business as Indra ("Indra", "we", "us"). They govern your use of the Indra website, web application, mobile application, and text-message service (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or sending a message to Indra, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Read section 2 before you rely on Indra for anything. Indra provides weather information. It is not a safety service, not an emergency service, and nobody is watching your messages or your whereabouts.

1. What the Service does
Indra takes weather model data from third-party providers, compresses a multi-day forecast into a very small message, and sends it to a phone number you have registered and verified. You can schedule these messages in advance for locations and dates you choose, and you can request them on demand by texting a command. Our applications decode those messages back into a readable forecast.
2. What the Service is not
This section is the most important one in this agreement.
- Indra is not an emergency or SOS service. It cannot summon help. It has no connection to search and rescue, emergency services, or any rescue coordination centre. Texting Indra will not bring anyone to you.
- Nobody is monitoring you. We do not watch your messages, we do not track your position, and we will not notice if you stop replying, miss a scheduled message, or fail to return. There is no check-in, no overdue alert, and no person on the other end of the line.
- Indra is not a substitute for an emergency beacon. Carry a personal locator beacon or satellite messenger with a genuine SOS function, and know how to use it. Indra is not one, and does not replace one.
- Indra is not a substitute for official weather warnings. We relay watches and warnings from the US National Weather Service where they are available, but you should consult official sources — and local avalanche, marine, and mountain forecast services — directly.
- Indra does not give you advice or make decisions for you. A forecast is information. Whether to travel, climb, cross, camp, or turn back is your decision and your responsibility alone.
3. Assumption of risk and your responsibility
Mountaineering, climbing, ski touring, backcountry travel, paddling, and remote expedition travel are inherently dangerous. They carry risks of serious injury and death, including from weather that no forecast predicted. Those risks are not eliminated, and are not meaningfully reduced, by any information Indra provides.
By using the Service, you acknowledge and agree that:
- You are solely responsible for your own safety and for the safety of anyone in your party.
- You have the skills, fitness, experience, and equipment appropriate to your objective, and you will make your own judgements independently of what Indra tells you.
- You will carry appropriate emergency communication and rescue equipment, and will not rely on Indra as a communication lifeline.
- You will not plan a trip in a way that depends on receiving an Indra message, because you may not receive one.
- You knowingly assume all risks of your activities, whether or not you used Indra.
4. Forecast accuracy
Weather forecasts are predictions. They are frequently wrong, and they are least reliable in exactly the terrain Indra is designed for: complex mountain topography, where conditions can differ sharply from the model grid within a few hundred metres and a few hours.
We source data from third-party providers, including Open-Meteo and the US National Weather Service. We do not generate, validate, or independently verify their data. To fit a full forecast into one message, Indra compresses and rounds values, and reduces resolution further when necessary — the delivered forecast is a lossy summary of an already uncertain prediction. Confidence indicators, where shown, are an estimate of model agreement and not a guarantee.
We do not warrant that any forecast is accurate, complete, current, or suitable for any decision you make with it.
5. Message delivery
Satellite messaging is best-effort. Messages may be delayed by minutes or hours, arrive out of order, arrive more than once, or never arrive at all. Causes outside our control include satellite visibility, terrain, weather, device battery and position, carrier and satellite-provider outages, and your device's own settings.
We do not guarantee that any message will be delivered, or delivered in time to be useful. A message that arrives late may describe weather that has already happened. Always check the timestamp and validity period of a forecast before acting on it.
6. Text messaging terms
Consent. You opt in to receive text messages by adding your phone number to your Indra account and confirming possession of the device by texting a one-time pairing code back to us. You represent that you are the subscriber of, or are authorised to register, each number you add. You may not register someone else's number without their permission.
What we send. Scheduled forecasts you have set up, replies to messages you send us, and account notices such as pairing confirmations and failed-send notices. We do not send marketing messages.
Frequency. Message frequency varies and is determined by the schedule you create — typically one to three messages per day while you are in the field, plus a reply to each message you send.
Cost. Message and data rates may apply. Charges for sending and receiving satellite or mobile messages are set by your carrier or satellite service provider, not by Indra, and are your responsibility.
Stopping messages. Reply STOP to any message to stop all messages to that number. Note that STOP is handled by the mobile carrier and blocks every message from us to that number, including forecasts you scheduled for later in your trip; we cannot override it from our side, and you will need to re-pair the device to resume. To pause only scheduled sends while keeping the ability to ask for a forecast, reply SKED OFF instead.
Help. Reply HELP for help, or email [email protected].
Carriers. Mobile carriers and satellite service providers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
7. Accounts and eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old and legally able to enter into this agreement. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for everything that happens under your account. Give us accurate information and keep it current — an out-of-date phone number or waypoint means forecasts go to the wrong place. Tell us promptly at [email protected] if you believe your account has been compromised.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Register a phone number you do not own or are not authorised to use.
- Resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit Indra forecasts without our written permission.
- Use the Service to send unsolicited, unlawful, harassing, or abusive messages.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems, or interfere with their operation.
- Use automated means to request forecasts at a volume that burdens the Service or our data providers.
- Use the Service for any application where failure could lead to death, personal injury, or environmental damage, in reliance on the Service functioning — including but not limited to commercial guiding, aviation, marine navigation, or industrial operations — without independently verified weather sources of your own.
- Reverse engineer our message format for the purpose of building a competing service, or circumvent any technical limit we set.
9. Fees
Some features of Indra may be offered free of charge, including during any beta or trial period. Where a plan or pass is paid, its price, duration, and what it includes are described at the point of purchase, and those details form part of these terms. Unless stated otherwise at purchase, fees are payable in advance and are non-refundable except where required by law or where we choose to make an exception.
We may change prices for future purchases, but we will not change the price of a pass you have already bought. If a payment fails while you are in the field, we will not cut off messages you have already scheduled for that trip; we will contact you afterwards to settle it.
10. Third-party services
Indra depends on third parties, including weather data providers, our messaging provider, mobile carriers, and satellite service operators. Their availability and behaviour are outside our control, their terms and privacy policies govern their own services, and we are not responsible for their acts or omissions.
11. Intellectual property
Indra, its software, message format, and applications are owned by us and protected by intellectual property law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for your own non-commercial trip planning and travel, subject to these terms.
Content you provide — your waypoints, routes, schedules, and messages — remains yours. You grant us only the licence we need to operate the Service for you: to store it, process it, and use it to fetch and deliver your forecasts.
Weather data originating from the US National Weather Service is a work of the United States government. Other data is provided under its own providers' terms.
12. Disclaimer of warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE; THAT ANY MESSAGE WILL BE DELIVERED OR DELIVERED ON TIME; OR THAT ANY FORECAST WILL BE ACCURATE OR SUITABLE FOR YOUR PURPOSES.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
13. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, INDRA WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE.
THIS INCLUDES, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY LOSS OR HARM ARISING FROM AN INACCURATE FORECAST, A DELAYED, UNDELIVERED, DUPLICATED, OR CORRUPTED MESSAGE, A DECISION YOU MADE IN RELIANCE ON THE SERVICE, OR ANY INJURY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE OCCURRING DURING ANY ACTIVITY IN CONNECTION WITH WHICH YOU USED THE SERVICE.
OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS.
These limits apply even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose, and they reflect a deliberate allocation of risk: Indra is priced as an information service, not as an insurer of your expedition. Again, some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, and nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
14. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Indra and its operator from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Service, your breach of these terms, your violation of any law or the rights of another, or any activity you undertook in connection with information the Service provided.
15. Suspension and termination
You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we discontinue the Service.
Except where safety or law requires immediate action, we will not terminate an account in a way that cuts off scheduled messages to someone who is currently in the field. Where we discontinue the Service, we will give reasonable advance notice and refund the unused portion of any pass.
Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, and 11 through 18 survive termination.
16. Changes
We may modify the Service or these terms. If we make a material change to these terms, we will notify account holders by email or in the app before it takes effect, and the "last updated" date above will change. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the new terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Service and close your account.
17. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. The courts located in the City and County of San Francisco, California have exclusive jurisdiction, and both parties consent to venue there. If you are a consumer resident in another jurisdiction, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer law where you live.
Before filing any claim, you agree to contact us at [email protected] and attempt to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.
18. General
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If any provision is held unenforceable, the rest remains in force. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these terms; we may assign them in connection with a transfer of the business. We are not liable for failure to perform due to causes beyond our reasonable control.
